I first "got into" donkeys to protect my Ostriches. We
have quite a few coyotes in the area, and I'd read that if you had donkeys
around, the coyote's natural instinct was to stay far, far away. It worked
wonderfully.
-AP Article: Guard Donkeys Help Ranchers Protect Herds
We currently have 6 standard breeding jennies and one jack, and
their babies are usually born in the early spring. Our babies are normally
brown, and some spotted babies. Please email us for details of what is currently
available. As you can see, smaller adults and children can ride the
standard sized donkeys, and they make wonderful "guard" animals to
protect other livestock. Our miniature donkeys started with Cable, the donkey that thinks
he's a person. He's extraordinarily friendly (sometimes annoyingly so) and
has one of the best dispositions we've seen. He's a spotted male, and about 4
years old. We bought him 3 brown jennies, and he's been happy every since.
:) In fact, we put a standard sized jenny in the pen with him, (We're
starting a separate line from our original set of standards) and somehow,
we're not quite sure (well, you know what I mean) she ended up with a baby the
following year, so Cable earned the nickname of "Superman" as well. ;)
Please feel free to contact us about anything, we love to swap
donkey stories and share information.
